LONGWOOD, NY – The Longwood school community is grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of one of its young students, third grader Leonela Lopez Chancay of Ridge Elementary School. Her passing has left an indescribable void, as classmates, teachers, and administrators struggle to come to terms with the devastating news.
Leonela was a bright, creative, and compassionate child whose presence lit up every room she entered. She had a passion for soccer and a love for art, especially drawing flowers. Her teacher recalled how her warm smile and generous spirit made everyone feel welcome. Leonela’s selflessness was evident—she would even save her earned school rewards to buy gifts for her family, a testament to her caring nature. Recently, she was recognized as a Ridge Rockstar, a reflection of her exceptional character and kindness.
School Offers Support Amid Grief
In the wake of this tragic loss, counselors will be available starting Tuesday morning to support students, faculty, staff, and families. Administrators acknowledge that grief affects everyone differently and encourage students and parents to reach out for any assistance needed.
“We want our families to know that we are here for them,” said a school representative. “This is a difficult time for our entire community, and we are committed to offering the support and resources necessary for healing.”
A Legacy of Kindness and Love
The Longwood School District extends its deepest condolences to Leonela’s family, friends, and loved ones. As the community grieves, they also hope to honor her memory by carrying forward the kindness, resilience, and compassion that she so effortlessly shared.
Leonela’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, a reminder of the profound impact that one young life can have on an entire community.
